The City of Eugene's Human Rights Commission has been working on a "Human Rights City Project" since 2006 to ensure that human rights are a central part of every City program. The Project is exploring ways that the City government can implement international human rights standards and principles in its overall operations. According to the City of Eugene's Human Rights Commission, the Human Rights City Project entails (1) ongoing research on initiatives being undertaken in other municipalities; (2) opening up a conversation with elected City officials, City managers and staff, and community members; and (3) future proposals for City Council action that could include a revision of the City of Eugene Human Rights Ordinance.
The City of Eugene recently hired a new city manager who has created a new city unit that includes the diversity division, the human rights division, and the sustainability program in its mandate.
